Captured images, from 2020 to 2021 of my Cichorium intybus. From propagation to relocation to under the Crab Apple tree, to the Runeboot bed and some growth. Although Chicory can be grown from seed, it's quicker to propagate via divisions which appear very early on. Looking at the plant stems, you'll notice naturally occurring divisions and it is these you follow and split to multiply the bundles of chicory you are growing. This is one those plants for me in which 'One is never enough'. However leaf miners can be a real issue with these greens as they are with Dandelion leaves. The best method I found with my Chicory here in combating these larvae burrowing pests was to simply keep on top of cutting out affected parts along with destroying those parts. I also found part sun or full sun with lots of companioning plants, especially of strong smelling kinds that the bug’s weren’t a fan of helped. Although the Chicory is drought tolerant, it still thrives in cooler and calmer conditions and at the end of the day a stressed out plant is a magnet to pests of which the pests come along to quicken the death process. Simple diluted Neem oil sprayed late at night also helps in combating the miners... This is a diary of photos from my botanical diary in 2020 to 2021. From the Chapter 'Cichorium intybus (chicory)' So much to propagate lined up and temporarily arranged so... The splitting of chicory... Leaf Miner tell tales... Propagated Chicory re-potted... Under the crab apple tree 'Idun'... From propagated into pots and into the bed, with some growth among companions...
