Captured images, from 2021 of the Symphytum x uplandicum, with my process of adding Comfrey leaves to garden beds in the Rune garden to use as a slow release green manure. You can mix the leaves into the top soil but in this scenario, I layer like a lasagne with sugarcane mulch to top because I’m just outright building soil up. This is also my preferred method of mulching with Comfrey, due to finding chop and drop can lead to attracting pests due to exposed decomposing top layer on the beds. Remember pests help nature along in its death cycle, so to speak. This is a diary of photos from my botanical diary in 2021. From the Chapter ‘Symphytum x uplandicum (Russian Comfrey) Comfrey as Green Manure Cutting back Comfrey leaves and turning them into the soil is one of my favourite Vegan and Green manure soil supplements or soil amendments. NPK values (Nitrogen-Phosphorus-Potassium) are the primary nutrients that plants need for good growth and NPK sources are rated. Compared to animal manures, comfrey values of NPK are relatively low. However, its nutrients are more immediately bioavailable to plants. Whereas animal manures can burn plants if added during the growing season, comfrey green manure can be applied at any time. When using comfrey as a green manure, add chopped comfrey to garden soil. Gently mix it into the top layers of the soil using a digging fork. By the next season, it will have decomposed and enriched the soil. Comfrey as Green Mulch Using mulch is good for protecting soil including top layers, preventing erosion and Comfrey as mulch is not only resourceful and economical. Helping to retain moisture and protect beneficial soil organisms, activating soil microbes as it decomposes. I really enjoy companioning shrubs and trees with skirts of Comfrey to act as living Green living mulch. Comfrey as a Newbie Jump starter Seedlings and the newly planted benefit from being fed comfrey from the get go. Here I’m preparing another potato tower and in the lasagne method I lay layers of comfrey leaves between layers of soil and sugarcane mulch. I also do this with seedling pots, which has another benefit of stopping water running out of the small pots (premature drying out of soil). With the seedlings, I simply lay a leaf, or portion of at the bottom of the pot before pouring in the seedling mix and planting. As the comfrey leaves decompose, they will provide essential nutrients and help the young plants grow strong and free of pest and disease. After layering the raised ‘Venus' gardened, I add a layer of Sugarcane mulch to avoid any pests coming to help the decomposing Comfrey leaves...
