These wee seeds remind me of chocolate icing sprinkles that you see on cupcakes and are no indicator of just who stunning these ‘imortelle’ flowers are. The monostrum cultivar is perfect for arrangements and decor with their double heads and despite the appearance; they actually have no petals but papery bracts instead. When you seed a sunflower head (which is from the same flower) the bracts that hold the seeds in the centre are basically the petals’ of this flower, thus their everlasting or immortelle status. I had a jar of these deadheaded blooms that I was using over ‘9’ years and they still had their scent 9 years later. Ranging from vibrant pinks to peachy orange to white and crimson hues, they are perfect for altars, and attracting pollinators and predators such as hover flies in the garden (hover flies eat aphids). This flower can also grow in rock and succulent gardens with low water requirements originating from down here in Australia. It has been a day, and these seeds have already germinated, stay tuned for future picture diaries, culture, maintenance and use. This is a diary of photos from my botanical diary. From the Chapter ‘Xerochrysum bracteatum' First draft of Seed packet sketches Okay I’m not really a ‘Pink’ sort of person and tend to lean towards fire and ice or Solar and Lunar colourings in gardens with scaping and combinations. So with that in mind I have started out with Scarlet, Orange and White seeds, but later on will most likely extend the range especially if there is demand so. These seed packets are my first freehand sketch drawn in black pen and then embossed with colored pens. I am planning on using a waxed paper of such for the actual print when packets are finalised in design later on, in which the fonts will be type set. Personally one of the most frustrating things is not seeing the Genus, species and Cultivator on the front of the packet, especially when I first started my seed collection. Such information at the front lets you know exactly what you are getting and makes for easier filing in ones seed catalogue. One of the possible formats of the seed packets I’m leaning towards is to use beige recycle paper type but for white flowering plants to use white gloss paper, for easier plant filing. White isn’t really a color and can also act like a clear quartz crystal in the gardens cape or bed/s. The seeds taking a bath... Overall Appearance of Fruit/Seeds Color/Texture: Smooth, matte Brown (Known as Capsela) Showiness: No Edibility: No Size (Length/Width): 2 to 3 mm long with the pappus radiating from one end Aroma: No Seed /viability: 2 to 3 years at about 50% germination rate at worst Fruit Type: Capsela Coverage: 1 ounce covers 150 Sq. Ft Storage: Store the cleaned seeds in a cool, dry place * * Always be sure to store your seed in a cool, dry place, keeping the combined humidity and temperature below 100. Ideally the environment will have a 40 degree Fahrenheit to 45 degree Fahrenheit temperature, with a humidity reading of 45-50%. When the combined number goes above 100, the life expectancy and vigour of seeds drop. Stay tuned for sowing the seeds and seedlings photo diaries within the plants culture.
