Creatively using a loss of a Oak... ... in this January midsummer gone. A beloved old Oak with winding limbs was killed off/taken down by the council and there seems to be a pattern in going after any old trees in order to 1) maintain rooftop lines and 2) remove european trees from european built land by europeans here in Australia. This tree in particular was home to a number of large cheeky ravens and it was distressing for me to see it removed. I went back the night after with a shopping trolley and a few trips of transporting some of the felled oak cuts, abandoned on the sidewalk. I'm always observing and interacting with my environment for it is also a cornerstone to my druidic/witchy way of life. To see the birds, distinguish them from their calls, hear proximity according to the hummings, note patterns and movements in the sky and seasons, so on. I pay special attention to the natural world and listen to its calls. But when I see a devastating aftermath as I did with this felling, I like to take something with me in memory of the tree and also kick in some permaculture principle s beyond the observation/interaction. By collecting these cuts I'm also collecting sources of energy that can be used to burn for heat and then the ash returned to the soil. In the act I'm also producing no waste, along with using/valuing renewable resources. These cuts were actually gathered in mind for making stools/seats to scatter about in my gardens which is also being creative in their use and responding to the external changes in my environment with the removal of the Oak. The Oak even had tendrils of entwined Ivy on its limbs and is extra sacred to me part in due to the Oak being Druir in Gaelic which is actually the namesake of us old druids. From chapter 'Vegan permaculture' Permaculture Principles Used here;
Oak cuts in the Moon garden... Oak cuts in the Rune garden... About European Litha and Midsummer Litha or Midsummer is ethnically European and also referred to as Alban Heruin literally means Light of the shore in Welsh. Litha is ethnically European and part of the ethnically Europeans blood. The name Litha is of Anglo-Saxon origin. The Anglo-Saxons called June Ærra Liða and July Æfterra Liða. Ærra more literally translates as "before" or "preceding", while Liða, or Litha, is often thought to represent Midsummer. The Old English adjective liðe means "soft, gentle, meek, mild, serene," while the verb liðan means "to sail."
