In the early tide of an Australian, Winters Samhuinn, I set out to rescape my front moon garden to become a herbal groundcover that will be a delight to walk barefoot on come spring... My journey includes some recordings at the end of this post of This Moon garden and how I got to this point including;
Plants at the top in order of left to right; Rosemary, Cat grass, Homestead Lavender, Avon Lavender, Wisteria, Stinging nettle canopy under another elder to the right hand side Plant array at the bottom from left to right; Comfrey under an elder, lined with lemongrass, Cynthia’s, Boston Ivy, Pink wave succulent and Wormwood at the right hand corner Early Pathways and Groundcovers I decided on a pathway pattern in the front garden of this property when I moved in deciding to make moon rays a feature and to play up the glowing white of the home. This was also a personal choice for me as it was with Freya’s help, that I even found this place at a real tough time in my life with a literal falling star in the location of the property appearing post Freya ritual and it was with Odin’s help I secured the place with the right timing/cutting out competition, for the property at the time. I had promised Freya at the time I would dedicate my life to the magickal paths of our ancestors that she governs and the Moon garden was a dedication to her. The back Runr garden I dedicated to Odin for the same reasons. Once pathways and the garden beds were decided on and mapped out, I then pulled out all the lawn/weed by hand (both back and front gardens) I then used mulch to surround and intertwine the loose concrete paver stepping stones (After lining the grounds with cardboard in a lasagne method). Obviously I did the same ground prep for the garden beds, and edged those used salvaged bricks. I had plants planted in boxes and organized their layout with these boxes whilst they were young, eventually the boxes broke down as the plants overtook them. Pyramid Planting I'm a fan of pyramid and companion planting, along with the square foot method. I also graph my plans and play around with deign using the computer to conceptualize the landscaping plans. Pyramid planting basically works from the top down in plant heights and is roughly as follows;
Food Forestry My overall Permaculture aim is pretty much always to have a Edible forest garden, not lawn, cultivating plants and trees throughout the seasons, for my magickal path, to eat, to share, to heal, to work, and to connect to my ancestors/beings. Constantly changing edibles, trees, shrubs, plants, herbs, flowers and crawlers for both me and the eco system I support in the space that I occupy and done so through a vegan lens. Creating more complexity into systems where I can to encourage as much self sustaining patterns that can be built in. Making my own vegan micronutrient/compound rich fertilizer for when needed, potting mulch/compost and chop/dropping to build upon the gardens and soil, opposed to stripping it. Updating and refreshing Pathways and Groundcovers A few years later when I had dug up the grounds again, including some of the garden beds, the cardboard had completely broken down into mulch. Now I could of just topped up more mulch which was way overdue, whilst removing any non established weeds coming over the top of thinned out mulch, but buying more mulch is still yet another resource of taken down trees, that I want to limit as much as possible. In permaculture it is better to can recycle or repurpose where you can opposed to buying new resources which further stress an already outstripped eco system. Rock or stone pathways and gardens are a nice option especially when coupled with things like, Ferns and Moss or Cacti and Succulents. Patterns and centrepieces can be made with different colors/tones, along with bordered or swirling low watering plants throughout the design. Alas, I also like living paths that can be walked on, life surrounding and intertwining the stepping stones, pavers, planks or even gravel. I love living paths with ground cover plants, which can include moss, creepers and herbs that can be walked on. I basically decided to replace replacing the existing, due for topping up mulch, for herbs, moss, and creepers and so forth. So this time I’m making living paths and in-between ground covers with herbs I can walk on. There's an array of mat-forming plants, tough enough to tolerate being walked on some, doubling in releasing scent and oils as you tread on them that can deter things like mosquitoes or even give one some aromatherapy. There are many ways to plan out the ground covers, but my own routine is as follows;
My starting ground cover choices;
Later on I will be adding/Seeding; Moss, Asylum, Snow in summer, Dichondra, Moneywort, Vinca, Baby tears and Corsican mint. Stay tuned for my progress on these. Things used in my Ground prep;
